JUCONI - Ecuador - Workshop Description
Together with JUCONI and in partnership with Charlotte Miller Art Project and Everything is Possible, U.K Photographer Laura Montag and Ecuadorian Psychologist Erika Baidal ran a 3-month photography project in the Ecuadorian port city of Guayaquil. This project has been funded through the 'Youth in Action' programme of the European Union. The project enabled 10 young street involved and high- risk youth to access opportunities to develop, explore and express feelings about their current situation through photography. The young people involved live in conditions of extreme poverty and social exclusion and lack recreational or creative-orientated spaces.
With limited resources but a determined group of enthusiastic teenagers we ran a series of workshops that were held twice a week in various locations from medical centres or classrooms in local schools.
The young people were given basic digital cameras and through a series of technical and creative workshops learnt skills of e.g. using flash, shutter-speed, aperture control and also the investigation of light, composition and decisive moment.
Setting the theme as the ‘interaction of cultures’, the young people photographed within their communities to document their own lives, ambitions, fears and hopes, focussing on aspects of their own culture to tell their story.

Setting the theme as the ‘interaction of cultures’, the young people photographed within their communities to document their own lives, ambitions, fears and hopes, focussing on aspects of their own culture to tell their story.
In the first sessions many of the young people experienced difficulties in starting the project and trying to think of intercultural ideas through images. To help the young people get started we created sketches and montages of found images to illustrate ideas of what ‘intercultural’ means to us. Different types of dance, food, race, music and fashion were explored. Two participants, who’s families immigrated from Africa to Ecuador, wanted to show how dance and particular styles of African dance are an important aspect of their life. They both belong to a community dance group.
In order to help the young people to develop further ideas for personal projects we began by creating role-plays, looking at researched images, and creating interviews to help to think how we might illustrate intercultural situations within our own lives.
Some of the young people decided to focus and explore on ideas such as inter-racial couples and the problems that can be faced within their own communities. Other ideas to photograph were how different religions exist in Ecuador, or even the huge array of cuisine and traditions that can differ from region to region.

Over a period of 6 weeks, the young people photographed in their communities and twice a week me met up to share ideas and images with the rest of the group. We used a projector so as to help discuss the images within the group. The young people found it useful to share their images to the group and talk about further ideas for their personal projects.

The project worked in partnership with JUCONI (Junto Con los NiƱos or Together with the Children) and Everything is Possible.
JUCONI is an Ecuadorian not-for-profit organisation that provides specialised educational and therapeutic services to street-working children and their families.
JUCONI´s primary objectives are:
* To provide street-involved children and young people with the tools and skills to build solutions to their own needs in an environment that guarantees their healthy development, and to exercise their rights in accordance with the framework of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
* To create families and communities which respect children’s rights and encourage their participation.
* To share skills and experiences with other NGOs and service providers in order to build civil society capacity to work effectively with street-involved and other socially excluded children.
Programmes include:
* Workshops for children on issues such as drugs and sex education
* Workshops for parents on issues such as health, nutrition, effective discipline and family planning
* Training for teachers in local schools in teaching and behaviour management strategies for street-involved children, who often suffer emotional, learning and concentration difficulties
* Regular youth interest groups and recreational activities, to develop the ability to integrate, participate and co-operate
* Youth leadership training, to provide the skills and self-esteem to take up alternatives to crime and gang involvement
* Building links with local services, including schools, churches, health service providers and existing community groups, in order to develop an effective network of community support service
The Charlotte Miller Art Project works with street-working children in the poverty-stricken port city of Guayaquil, Ecuador. It provides a place for street involved and high risk children and youth where they can identify their hopes for the future and methods of realising those hopes, through art activities appropriate to their developmental stages.
The project has been running since 2002 and to date over 300 children have taken part in a variety of arts based activities including painting, drawing, photography, textiles, video, story telling and performance arts.
